The second seminar of our autumn Design Research Seminar circle will be presented by our visiting Fulbright scholar Dr. Cheryl E. Ball. Cheryl is an associate professor of new media and editor of the journal Kairos, and will be staying with us at AHO for the next year.

She is going to present and discuss with us two works related to her AHO’s engagement

“The first piece (“Digital humanities scholarship and electronic publication”) is written with my  Senior Editor at Kairos (http://kairos.technorhetoric.net). It’s about the communities and technologies necessary to make scholarship that is digital, interactive, and multimedia in nature — *designed scholarship* if you will. It’s a rather functional piece with lots of concrete examples about digital media publishing, which is a possible outlet for publication for PhD design students and faculty. (And related to the kind of journal I’ve been asked to help AHO consider implementing this year.) The second piece is single-authored and about how I translate my editorial work with digital media scholarship at Kairos into mentoring authors (and, as a byproduct, teaching students, including PhD students in writing for media-based publication). Both of these pieces will relate to AHO’s possible direction in exploring changes to its thesis format this year as well as in expanding the publication venues for design research.”

We have invited Dr. Synne Skjulstad from Westerdals School of Communication over to comment on Cheryl’s work, to introduce the discussion.

This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about alternative ways of publishing our research, and to be introduced to Cheryl and her work.  we hope to see you all there!
